Nail sickness on Victorian slate and stone
Bradford's older terraces are largely slate and stone slate on original ferrous nails. The covering can be sound while the fixings corrode away, so pieces slide out one at a time from a roof that looks fine from the pavement. Once several have gone in different places, the honest answer is usually strip, re-batten, breathable membrane and re-cover.
Weight on tired battens
Stone slate puts a serious load on the roof structure. Where battens are undersized, split or rotted at the fixings, the roof starts to dip and ripple long before anything actually falls. Pennine-edge exposure
